If you have your ear to the ground, you’ll already know that the real estate industry is booming. That property prices have increased by 30% or more in some areas of Australia. That interest rates are at all-time lows, and that more people are moving to the regions than ever before. When the COVID-19 pandemic reached Australian shores, the demand for real estate was expected to drop significantly. Instead we experienced a pandemic property boom.
People started working from home. Home office space (or just more space), along with reasonably sized backyards, became necessities. Government stimulus programs, and property investors wanting to cash in, drove real estate prices to all-time highs.
Opportunities to work in the real estate industry also opened up, and people began to see that working as a real estate agent was a great career with bountiful prospects. In Sydney, real estate agents were compared to rock stars and, in Melbourne, top estate agents were described as ‘titans of their industry’.
There are dozens of great reasons to work as a real estate agent in Australia, but here are seven good ones:
1. There are multiple rewards if you put in the work
If you complete a reputable real estate course, and work hard to build a relationship with your vendors, you can create a rewarding lifelong career. Real estate agent Gavin Rubinstein, who was awarded number one salesperson in NSW for Australia’s largest real estate group every year from 2013 to 2020, agreed that the golden rule of real estate is to “Look after the people and the money will come.”
Working in a career regarded by many as glamourous, Rubinstein’s advice to people starting out in real estate was to “shut out all the noise and just work damn hard … that’s the key,” he said. “At the end of the day hard work trumps it all.”
So wear rose-coloured glasses if you want, but don’t forget that long-lasting success starts with the best real estate course you can find, followed by hard work and authentic relationships with vendors, buyers and colleagues.
A career in real estate enables you to work flexible hours, build your own client base and choose your own career goals. If you put in the work, the rewards will follow.
2. Work flexible hours
Working your own hours and scheduling holidays around those times you prefer to take off is an added bonus when working as a real estate agent.
As your day can often be filled with house inspections, phone calls, and meeting vendors and buyers, you’re able to work from just about anywhere. All you need most times is your car and your phone. Meet clients at their favourite coffee shop? Why not!
Remember, though, that it’s still work and you’ll need to wear smart office clothes. The relationships you’re building are crucial to your growing client list and your reputation in the real estate industry. Your business connections and professional image are part of your ongoing success.
Don’t forget that completing a good real estate course is the first important step to your new career.
3. Unlimited income potential
It’s a good idea not to focus on a big pay packet before you’ve even completed a real estate course. It’s true that real estate agents can achieve tremendous success. But never lose sight of the work they put in to get there.
The two most important skill sets are business skills and people skills. A genuine interest in real estate will take you a long way too.
4. Selling real estate builds confidence
When you sell a house, you’re often selling the largest investment a person will make in their lifetime. For buyers, it’s both a financial and emotional decision. For vendors it’s about trust and confidence. A confident real estate agent is essential in both these scenarios.
If the agent appears insecure or is lacking in confidence, the vendor may lose their nerve and seek another agent they feel they can trust with their most important investment.
Strategies that real estate agents can use to develop confidence include deep listening, eliminating negative thoughts, resolving conflict and learning to communicate effectively outside their comfort zone.
Of course, the best way to build confidence is to develop real estate knowledge and experience. A high-quality real estate course develops industry knowledge and teaches students how to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.
5. You make people’s dreams come true
Buying a first home, or any home, is one of life’s biggest moments. You can have the time of your life helping clients purchase their dream homes. A house they fill with memories, or renovate to perfection, before contacting you about selling and upgrading.
When you put people first, success is never far away. If you’re a people person and love helping people to make life decisions, then working as a real estate agent will bring you long-lasting satisfaction.
6. Build a nation-wide network
You develop two types of networks when you work as a real estate agent. One is a network of clients who engage you to buy or sell property, and the other is a network of fellow real estate agents who become colleagues and mentors.
Networking is essential to growing your client base. Getting those first real estate clients can be challenging, but network well and you’ll have more people contacting you to sell their properties.
It doesn’t end there, of course, because you need your clients to come back next time they’re buying or purchasing property. Stay in touch and check in now and then to see how your former clients are going, and you’ll be the first person they think of when they need real estate advice.
7. An abundance of real estate jobs
Becoming a real estate agent is just one way to work in the industry. There are a number of roles available at different levels of the real estate industry.
Traditionally, you begin your real estate career as an assistant agent or agent representative and then progress to the role of a licensed real estate agent who can operate and run their own agency. The real estate courses may be slightly different across Australia’s states and territories, but the skills are the same.
If you’re not sure about working in residential real estate, you can work in commercial real estate, or as a buyer’s advocate, a marketing manager or property manager. You can even do a real estate course to become an auctioneer!
